After a long ride to Yorktown, VA (thanks Dr. Laura) I setup my bike an trailer and realized that I still had too much weight on the trailer, so I had to take some things out of the bag and send them back. After doing this about 4 or 5 times, I hopped onto my bike and rode to the Victory Monument in Historic Yorktown. At first I thought I would send my laptop back home as well, but nooo way!

After saying goodbye to Doc, I took the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown. It was a very nice ride. But just as it was getting dark I arrived in Jamestown I found out that the campgrounds had been sold and that they are no longer campgrounds. So I had to turn around and ride for about 6 or 7 more miles back to Williamsburg to find a hotel. I found Motel 6 and that is where I am right now, just about to go to sleep... after I make a few calls.

Tomorrow I am off to Glendale and beyond.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I said, "thank goodness for roaches", because there was a roach in my room and after I told the front desk, they gave me a room for free.

Tonight, while watching the Western Conference NBA Finals, I saw a quote that I use for "self motivation" on the wall of the San Antonio Spurs locker room. The quote is from Jacob Riis, a 19th century Journalist and Photographer who devoted his life to helping the impoverished.

Let me know what you think...

“When nothing seems to help,
I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred
times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and
first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that
did it, but all that had gone before.”

Front Street, Harrisburg, PA. Sometime in the Fall.

Today I was at "Italian Lake" , in Harrisburg, PA, to take some photos of the bridge and some of the more exotic trees you can find down there. Well, when I got there, I met three awesome young people. Two boys and a girl, who were just there being kids, riding there bikes and enjoying the nice Spring day. Anyway, I was very impressed to see these three young teenagers, brave enough to stand up to another group of teens who were throwning rocks at the fish in the lake. By the time I got close enough to see what was going on, the rock throwing kids were gone. I guess they went to find something else to throw rocks at.

After a few minutes, I saw the "awesome teens" with a stick in the water. The teens were tapping the side of the (concrete, man-made) lake and there was some "thing" under the water swimming towards them. The closer I got to the teens to see what was in the water, the closer the "thing" got. The thing, I could tell, was about 4 feet long and when I got to where the teens were, I saw that the "thing" was actually a carp. A wounded carp. The teens told me that the other group of teens had been throwing rocks at it and consequently wounded it. It had a gash on the back of its head from one of those rocks.

Then I saw something that I couldn't believe. I saw the teens petting the carp. They called the carp over, and then they they were actually petting it. They all felt sorry for the fish because it was wounded and the fish seemed to sense it. This went on for about 20 minutes. It was amazing. The teens, who were all from the area, were as shocked as I was. They said they had never seen anything like it.

I had a nice talk with them and they were planning to write a story about it and then send it off to the local news stations. I told them I would post some of the photos on my blog - and here they are.

If any of you awesome young people read this, don't forget to send me an email so I can send you the photos. I think what you did was great!
